Quest (a Tonkin Trilogy novella)

Rrrenbo

While this is a novella, it can be read as a standalone.

Every teenager goes through a phase wherein they're convinced that their parents are evil, right? Well, I was no different.

My uncle Jacob had survived a plane crash and now lived alone with PTSD, my father was a drunk and lived alone with his booze, and my aunt Evangeline was off fighting Zenoir, risking her life for the greater good. But my mother forbade me and my sister from seeing any of them, the three people in the world who needed my love the most. I hated her. She was my mother, so I had to love her, but I still hated her.

'Come do the dishes, Normani, I'm going to get my nails done.' 'Come feed your sister, Normani, I'm going for a drink.' 'Come clean the house, Normani, I'm going out with the girls.'

  Bitch.

My sister, too, was reaching an age where she started to realise that she barely saw any of her family anymore. My mom used the excuse that Zenoir would kill anyone who left their homes, but she left the house all the time.

When she was out one day, I decided to go through her room - which she always said was out of bounds - and I found a box of letters from my uncle Jacob, my father, and my aunt Evangeline, as well as a single letter from somebody named Kurt Tonkin. That was the letter that changed mine and my sister's lives forever.
